Powys Localities Initiative / Menter Ardaloedd Powys
Covid 19 has hit hard over the last couple of years. It has impacted us all personally and played havoc with the clubs, activities and services that are fundamental parts of community life. As part of the process of building back better, the Localities Initiative is an opportunity to ask questions about what we need in our communities to make them healthy, supportive, rich and varied places to live and work, both now and into the future.
The Localities Initiative works across the 13 Locality Networks in Powys. These networks have been set up provide a forum for discussion about local needs and to promote collaboration in the development of services that meet those needs. This page is a place to continue those discussions between network meetings, and to connect with other localities across the county.
You can also read case studies on some of the projects which have received investment from the Localities Initiative project, funded by the UK Government through the UK Community Renewal Fund.
Dros y ddwy flynedd diwethaf, mae Covid-19 wedi cael effaith enfawr. Mae wedi cael effaith ar bob un ohonom ar lefel bersonol, ac wedi dinistrio clybiau, gweithgareddau a gwasanaethau sy’n rhan sylfaenol o fywyd cymunedol. Fel rhan o’r broses o ‘ail-adeiladu’n well’, mae’r Fenter Ardaloedd yn gyfle i ofyn cwestiynau am yr hyn sydd ei angen ar ein cymunedau i sicrhau eu bod yn iach, yn gefnogol, ac yn fannau cyfoethog ac amrywiol i fyw a gweithio ynddynt, nawr ac yn y dyfodol.
Mae’r Fenter Ardaloedd yn gweithio ar draws 13 o Rwydweithiau Ardal ledled Powys. Sefydlwyd y rhwydweithiau hyn er mwyn darparu fforwm ar gyfer trafodaethau ynghylch anghenion lleol ac i hyrwyddo cydweithio wrth ddatblygu gwasanaethau sy’n bodloni’r anghenion hynny. Add your ideaAlkinabout 2 years agoGreen Power for Llanwrtyd Wells
I've been researching, talking to experts, networking and identifying funding for a green power-station here in Llanwrtyd Wells; by that I mean the production of zero carbon, sustainable energy for the community, by the community and for the benefit of the community. I'm discovering that it's a monster task on many levels, the least of which appears to be the technology itself which is proven whether we go down the hydro, wind or solar route or some combination of these. There are big regulatory and planning hurdles, large capital expenditure at the outset, and a time frame measured in years, but I believe we have to overcome those obstacles for the local community not only to survive but to thrive. The answer to impending energy poverty I believe is energy independence. I also feel that as a small town we can become a beacon for other communities to take the same path and collectively respond to the climate crisis. I'm now at the point where I've identified possible funding for things like: initial consultancy, a public consultation and feasibility studies, and also down the line the possibility of some capital funding required to implement such a project. There is a very short time-frame on accessing that initial funding, as the money needs to be spent by June, it's also the gateway to further financial support so we have to jump on it! In conversations with Share Energy, who help with the setting up of energy co-ops, I have been advised that one of the ways to proceed would be to set up a Community Benefit Society and to have a Community Share Offering; we will of course be looking at all possible means of financing this project and appropriate legal formations. The benefit of this legal structure is the relative ease in putting together the share offering compared to a limited company becoming a PLC and to ensure that any surpluses -if indeed there are to be any- would remain in our community and could be used to support local projects. My hope would be that after the initial capital expenditure was payed for, we would be able to pass on the benefit of cheap energy to our town, in the meantime I am advised that should we reach successful implementation, we would be able to compete with the current electricity providers. As a next step I'm looking to build a steering group around the project and subsequently secure funding to enable us to make informed decisions about how we might proceed and with what type of renewable technology. Needless to say this project is very much embryonic right now and I'm seeking to galvanise support from every quarter. Please get involved!

As we are in a climate emergency, I feel this would be one of the best ways for our Five Council area to reduce their emissions. It could reduce the number of cars in and out of Crickhowell on a daily basis, and could alleviate the parking pressures in the town.
0 comment1Jackie Charltonabout 2 years agoCommunity Transport Hub - Feasibility Study
Crickhowell and surrounding council area would be in an ideal position to set up a Community Transport Hub. These are growing across England in rural communities as well as urban areas. Buckinghamshire Council have a useful guide here:- https://www.buckscc.gov.uk/services/transport-and-roads/buses-and-trains/community-transport/ The Powys Localities Initiative is in an ideal position to fund a feasibility study to explore the potential of such a HUB in Powys. Brecknock Access Group have highlighted some major issues for local transport barriers to taxis or other forms of public transport for the disabled. Young people between the ages of 14 and 17 are often excluded from events and activities due to the lack of public transport. Young people over the age of 17 who have no desire to drive a car or who are unable to afford crippling insurance or even the thought of owning a vehicle are also excluded. In view of the climate and ecological emergency which is hitting us now and the energy crisis which is not going away, developing future community transport must be considered a priority. There is a public car park in Crickhowell, Llangynidr and Talybont. CRiC or Crickhowell Volunteer Bureau would be ideally situated to set up a booking system and we know there are minibuses and other community transport schemes already in the area. This feasibility study would take a look at providing a HUB and central booking system as well as the potential for extending the existing community transport network for everyone.

Some areas of Knighton require some TLC. With the right organisation and funding we could create a community art project for all ages to transform these areas into something to be proud of. We’ve been offered help from a professional artist and also have a lot of local artistic talent.
0 comment3lorriesaundersabout 2 years agoI want to see a properly maintained and regularly up-dated notice board, possibly at the bus station in bowling Green Lane, for all public
transport timetables via Knighton; buses and trains. The times are currently out-of-date. A bus driver told me that I should not rely on the last bus of the day from Ludlow - even though it is on all timetables online. I could have been stranded in Ludlow, if I hadn't asked. (I do NOT have a smart phone). It is almost impossible to plan journeys.

Activities for the youth of knighton, roller disco which would encourage not only the teenagers but younger children as well as adults. Nerf is a good alternative to air soft and again all ages can join in. Can split sessions in to age groups. Once the equipment has been sought the outlay would be minimum and I’m sure people would object to a small entrance fee which would then go back into the fund to keep it running.

Add your ideaPennyabout 2 years agoLlandrindod as a Horse-Friendly Transport Town
There are many horse owners in our area. Horses, as a form of transport, basically run on grass. One factor preventing people riding or carriage-driving into town to do their shopping or other errands may be that there is nowhere to ‘park’. A small parcel of grassland, somewhere in the town, could be fenced off, with a gate, and horse owners could book a slot there, and bring their own padlocks if they were security conscious. Any interested parties could collect the 'fallout' for use to fertilise garden vegetables! Part of a Circular Economy. This will not be the answer to transport problems generally, but even if just a few people saved a car journey with horse travel (ridden or driven) then it may set a planet-friendly trend. It would also contribute to health and well-being and would put a smile on people’s faces!
5 comments7John Seniorabout 2 years agoA live up to date website of all community-based activities in Powys
Communities have limited human and financial resources, with voluntary groups often operating in isolation. A live weekly-updated website listing all community-based activities, their projects and meeting dates throughout Powys would allow groups to prevent duplication of effort, minimise date clashes, and facilitate synergistic interaction between groups, thus maximising output of the large but finite human and financial resources in the voluntary sector. The project would require funding for an information-gathering coordinator to identify sources of data, website design and maintenance (including a live diary), information-gatherers to input data weekly, and design and distribution of a broadsheet publicising the website.
3 comments8Pennyabout 2 years agoBritish Horse Society could facilitate identifying and promoting horse-friendly routes for travel into towns
A consultation reveals that most horse-owners who would consider using their horses to travel into town would be greatly encouraged to do so by way-marking of horse-friendly routes. There could be preparatory identification of routes which may then need future improvement and signage. This would represent a low-carbon transport initiative, suitable for rural Powys, which could also assist other Active Travellers (walkers and cyclists) by quiet way-sharing.
0 comment2Martinaabout 2 years agoUpdate and maintain the existing town website.
We already have a very nice looking town website (llandrindod.co.uk), but it does not look much updated and it's time consuming to add events. Perhaps somebody could be employed to maintain this existing facility.
0 comment2Emabout 2 years agoFunding for a two sided printed monthly Broadsheet to keep people up to date with rapid changes that potentially affect us all locally.
Not everyone uses social media, not everyone wants to, although many people enjoy the kind of paper newsletter that summarises information that is relevant although often publicised too late. Hay on Wye used to have such a newsletter (weekly - I can't remember) called 'Haywire' that had a limited print run and was eagerly waited by the wider community. It was distributed in known locations. An Editorial group would ensure its relevance.
