What's happening?

Across the UK and Wales, the NHS is under pressure. In Powys, we are also facing our own set of challenges.

We have experienced lots of big changes in recent years, including:

  • the COVID-19 pandemic,
  • rising demand for treatments,
  • more people living longer with two or more health conditions,
  • growing waiting lists,
  • and large increases in the cost of fuel, food and other bills.

Together, these changes also mean that our current healthcare services now cost more than we can afford.

What are the challenges here in Powys?

With these challenges in mind, we are looking at how best to plan ahead so that our health care services meet your needs, that of your family, and our population as a whole. Not just now, but in the future.

We have called our emerging plan Better Together. It is our big conversation with you, the people of Powys. By listening and understanding what health care services are like for you, we will be able to plan for, and shape the future of safe, quality health services for our county into the next decade.

What else do I need to know?

Better Together is about building on the strengths we have in Powys, addressing weaknesses, finding opportunities to improve, and responding to challenges. This is a journey that will take several months to design – and may take several years to fully deliver. The first part of this journey is to make sure we have a shared understanding of the problems we need to solve. To begin this conversation, we are keen to find out from you:

  • what’s good about health services in Powys (key strengths)
  • what’s poor and not working so well (the weaknesses in our health care offer)
  • what ideas you might have that could help us improve (opportunities)
  • what might get in the way and stop us making the improvements we want to make (threats)

Hayley Thomas, Chief Executive said; “Our ambition is that Powys residents receive safe, quality and reliable health care services. We want to make the very best use of the resources we have whilst ensuring above all that patient care and safety is at the forefront of everything we do.”

*What is a Case for Change?

A Case for Change pulls together all the information and data we hold about health services in Powys. This means we can see clearly what is happening in terms of the health of our county, what we need to consider and change. It allows us to really think about how we respond and plan ahead for the next 10 to 25 years ensuring health services are sustainable and will support and deliver for our residents.

  • Powys Teaching Health Board is keen to hear back from residents, patients, families, voluntary groups, partners and anyone else who uses health services to help us to plan out as best we can our future health service offer.

Our core mission is to provide and commission safe services that offer the best outcomes for patients.

The work that we do on Better Together is required to optimise the care of all patients; safeguard services; improve resilience where it is currently fragile; reduce inefficiencies and respond to staffing and budgetary pressures.

Before you complete this survey, please do read our Case for change and have a look at the other documents provided.

Thank you.  We would like your feedback please by 25 May 2025.
