Why are we asking for your views?
We need to plan how we spend money on services for the year 2026–27 and beyond. Your opinions will help us decide what matters most to people in Powys.
Every year, we must set a budget that shows how much money we will spend on things like schools, care for older people, and roads. Costs are going up, and we have less money than we need, so we have to make some tough choices.
Most of our money comes from:
Council Tax
Business Rates
Government Grants
Charging for services we deliver
Our biggest spending areas are:
Social Services – helping vulnerable adults and children
Schools – making sure pupils get a good education
Roads, transport and recycling
Because Powys is a large rural area, it costs more to provide services here than in large towns and cities.
What’s the challenge?
We need £29 million extra next year to cover rising costs, this includes:
Pay increases for teachers, care workers and other staff.
Prices for goods and services have gone up because of cost inflation.
More people relying on help from us.
Helping to tackle the climate emergency.
We’ve already saved £52 million over the last 5 years, but we need to save another £19 million next year. In addition to anincrease in Council Tax.
What are we investing in?
We have big plans to improve Powys, including:
Building new schools and improving existing ones
Creating more council houses
Fixing roads and bridges
Updating care homes
Making council buildings more energy-efficient
