Powys County Council and Freedom Leisure will be replacing the carpet on the outdoor synthetic pitch in Ystradgynlais. We would like to engage with clubs, stakeholders and potential users regarding the replacement surface.
We are conducting a survey that will assist us make an informed decision on the type of surface that will replace the existing carpet. The aim for the facility will be to maximise opportunities and meet the requirements of learners and community clubs, whilst also providing recreational opportunities for the local community and surrounding areas.
The facility is required to be available for a range of sports, and with that consideration the options for the replacement carpet are as follows: -
Sand Dressed Astroturf – Gen 2 multi-sports area:
Suitable for hockey, tennis, netball, football training, recreational football, modified football games, Tag and Touch Rugby/Handling skills, athletics training, general PE lessons and multi-sports.
Short Pile 3G (40mm):
Suitable for football competition (FAW Tier Ground Criteria permitting) and training, participation hockey (some schools in Powys are currently using this surface for hockey lessons), Tag and Touch Rugby/Handling skills, general PE lessons and multi-sports.

A new sand-dressed AstroTurf will be installed at Ystradgynlais Sports Centre, replacing the outdated sports pitch. As part of the works, an improved lighting scheme will also be installed.
The works will be carried out after Powys County Council successfully secured a £350,000 Community Focussed Schools Capital Grant from the Welsh Government.
